“I received a frantic call early one the morning, there is a child with acute appendicitis and his parents are desperate. As a paediatrician I clearly understood the need to act fast. The charity hospital who made the diagnosis had no space to admit him, so they started pain management and sent him on to a government facility. The government hospital dismissed the child as he had no more symptoms as the pain relievers perviously given were working well. I was frustrated, the history, bloods and ultrasound were clear, he had acute appendicitis, so what to do next? What would you do if it were your child and you had no funds or insurance for private care?

I sent messages across the world asking for help. Within the next hours we had the little boy admitted into a well equipped local facility. The appendix was near to rupture and too big for a Key-Hole surgery. Within 48 hours he was discharged well and healthy.

How do people who fall between the gaps survive an emergency like this without help? The answer is they don't. I have seen it again and again, and it is heartbreaking.
